Masutes Group has partnered with former Scotland international rugby professional Ben Toolis to launch Fifty Twenty‑Two (FTT).
This bespoke consultancy is designed to help athletes build sustainable, hands-off income streams beyond their sporting careers.
The launch took place at Edinburgh Napier University’s Craiglockhart Campus, where the inaugural educational event was ‘A View from Athlete Entrepreneurs’. This brought together athletes, business leaders, and academics to explore how the mindset developed in sport can drive success in business and investment.
Founded this year, FTT is based on an investment model five years in the making.
Ben, who sought a sustainable investment strategy during his playing career, connected with Pav Masutes, CEO of Masutes Group, whose expertise in property investment was pivotal in shaping the initiative.
Together, they created FTT to overcome the unique challenges athletes face: short career spans, limited time, and the need for structured, long-term investment solutions.
Ben explained: “When the stability of my playing career began to shift, it became clear that I needed something more sustainable behind me. That realisation is what ultimately shaped FTT.
“The learning curve was steep, but it’s the reason FTT exists. We want to help athletes turn uncertainty into opportunity and support them with a pathway that feels structured, sustainable and genuinely achievable.”

Masutes Group: FFT Driving Athlete Investment
FTT operates as part of Masutes Group Limited, a company specialising in fully managed investment strategies designed for long-term growth.
The consultancy guides athletes through the full investment lifecycle – from sourcing opportunities and financial modelling to purchase facilitation and property management – delivered via Masutes Group’s short-term rental management team, mySTAYINN.
Beyond investment, FTT fosters community through The FTT Club, a private network for athletes, coaches, agents, and performance staff. The club helps members develop identity, long-term stability, and the confidence to thrive beyond sport.
It’s a reflection of Masutes Group’s philosophy: investment is about more than money – it’s about opportunity, support, and future-proofing.

FFT Launch Event: Sport Meets Business
The launch event was a showcase of how athletic discipline translates into business acumen. Panellists included:
- Ben Toolis – Co-founder of FTT, sharing insights from his transition from professional sport to business and investment.
- Emily Divine – Sport and Exercise PhD Researcher and founder of Divine Sport Consultancy, specialising in female health in sport.
- Dave Whiteford – Former professional rugby player and co-founder of premium whisky brand Against the Grain Ltd, sharing experience in marketing and business strategy.
- Woody Morris – International sports journalist and entrepreneur with experience in media, wellness, and business ventures.
Professor Susan Brown, University Head of Sport Engagement at Edinburgh Napier University, emphasised the importance of initiatives like FTT. She said: “Fifty Twenty-Two represents an excellent example of support for athletes as they navigate life beyond sport. Events like this bring together expertise from sport, business, and academia to provide practical guidance and inspire confidence in the next generation of athlete entrepreneurs.
“It was even more special, but not surprising that FTT’s two co-founders and all panellists are Edinburgh Napier alumni. Congratulations to all, and I wish Ben and Pav every success in this exciting venture.”
Pav highlighted the event’s broader significance: “It was a fantastic platform to showcase how sport can provide the skills and mindset for success in business and investment.
“We’re thrilled to see the engagement and discussions it sparked. This reinforces our mission to support athletes in building sustainable futures beyond their sporting careers.”
Why FTT Matters
Professional sport often comes with a short career window, irregular income, and limited spare time. These are all challenges that make long-term financial planning complex.
FTT addresses these challenges head-on, providing athletes with structured investment pathways in property and alternative assets, alongside a supportive network to build confidence and knowledge.
The initiative also highlights the growing recognition that athlete investment should be holistic. FTT offers not just financial opportunity, but guidance, mentorship, and a sense of community. Essential ingredients for a sustainable post-sport future.

Looking Ahead: The Next Step for FFT
With the launch now complete, FTT will begin onboarding its first cohort of athlete clients. This involves guiding them through property investment and other long-term wealth strategies.
The model is designed to be scalable and replicable. It provides athletes with practical tools and expert support while freeing them to focus on their sporting careers.
For Masutes Group, the launch of FTT represents a continuation of its mission to unlock opportunity and create long-term value. By extending its property and investment expertise to the athletic community, the group is creating pathways that turn sporting success into lasting financial stability.
Final Thought
Masutes Group and Ben Toolis have demonstrated that the skills cultivated in sport – discipline, resilience, and focus – are directly applicable to business and investment.
FTT provides a structured, supported route for athletes to harness those skills beyond the field. This ensures that when the final whistle blows, their success continues.
Through FTT, Masutes Group is not only guiding investments but shaping futures – empowering athletes to thrive in every arena of life.
